This is the first of five episodes in a series which details the life and death of Portugal's Ferdinand Magellan, the explorer who is credited with sailing around the world for the first time. This episode focuses upon his childhood before traveling with Ferdinand past India for the first time. It is during this trip that he contracted 'spice fever,' beginning his own personal mission to find a faster way to the fabled Spice Islands. Seeking to boost his profile, Ferdinand next traveled to Northern Africa in order to fight the Moors. The decision turned out to be a disaster as it resulted in him having to approach King Manuel I from a position of weakness.
