Aaron Burr Part II: His Original Sin

This is the second in a series of six episodes regarding America's fallen founder, Aaron Burr.  This episode traces his rise and subsequent downfall in Republican political circles.  Burned once before my Thomas Jefferson, Burr's vow to oblige every single elector to throw a vote towards him - resulting in a tied election in 1800.  Once tossed to the vote, Alexander Hamilton's backroom dealings lends credence to the fact that Burr might be seeking the top office for himself.  In the face of Virginia's raising of an army to back Jefferson, Hamilton relented - pulling the strings of another congressmen to crown Thomas Jefferson.  In his explanation, he torches the ground that Burr stride upon - referring to him as an embryo caesar and setting the stage for their infamous duel.

This is the fifth and final episode in a series regarding America's history with its first colony, the Philippines.  The Philippines gained its independence in the wake of WWII, but remained close allies until the rise of Rodrigo Duterte, a firebrand populist who centered a violent war on drugs at the heart of his agenda.  Written before the election of Donald Trump to a second non-consecutive term, this episode looks at the parallel's between Duterte's demonization against drug users and the way that the GOP talks about illegal migrants in the US.

This is the third in a series of five episodes regarding America's history with its first colony, the Philippines.  Control of the Philippines has changed hands thanks to the Spanish American war and an additional 20 million dollars for the Archipelago.  For the first time in its history, America takes up the mantle of Empire.  This episode traces that starts and stutters that marked the beginning of the so called 'benevolent empire.'  William McKinley, William Howard Taft, and Teddy Roosevelt each attempt to 'self-duplicate' their nation by exporting our values, education, and governing systems.  Unfortunately, the continuing insurgency threatens to place the entire experiment in the hands of the military, one that had yet to embrace their 'little brown brothers.'

America has fulfilled its' manifest destiny to go from sea to shinning sea, but without a frontier to conquer, the United States sets its sights upon empire.  This episode takes a look at the run-up to the Spanish American War, the explosion of the Maine, and the Hollywood styled creation of the legend of Teddy Roosevelt, rough rider.  Throughout it all, we will look at how each decision affected the Philippines, as the outbreak of the war would result in Commodore Dewey smoothly sailing into Manila Bay - ready to issue his infamous order 'you may fire when ready!'
