Toussaint L’ouverture Part I: His life as a Haitian slave
This is the first episode in a four part series focused upon the life of Toussaint Louverture. Few know the man's history despite the fact that the Haitian led the only successful slave rebellion in history. For comparison sake, we will begin the episode with a lengthy retelling of Spartacus, the most famous of all slave revolts. From there we will detail the discovery and colonization of Haiti by the European powers and the role that sugar played within the decision to import massive amounts of African slaves to the Caribbean.
We'll look at Toussaint's family as well as the role that the religions of Catholicism and Voodoo played within his early life. This episode takes us through his freedom as well as his re-enslavement at the Breda planation; ending in 1785 with a look towards the beginning of the 1791 Haitian Revolution.
